Ulum al-hadith

How a report is authenticated

عِلْمُ مُصْطَلَحِ الْحَدِيث

A hadith is not believed because it is famous. It is weighed: the chain, the men, the wording, and whether a hidden crack sits under a clean surface. This is ulum al-hadith — the same questions Bukhari, Muslim, and the four Sunan asked before they wrote a number.

Mustalah asks if the report is sound. Usul al-fiqh asks what a sound text does as a ruling.

الإِسْنَادُ مِنَ الدِّينِ، وَلَوْلَا الإِسْنَادُ لَقَالَ مَنْ شَاءَ مَا شَاءَ

The isnad is part of the religion. Were it not for the isnad, anyone would say whatever he wished.

I · The five tests

What makes a report sahih

Ibn al-Salah’s conditions. Fail one, and the number is not sahih — however famous the sentence.

  1. 1

    اتِّصَالُ السَّنَد

    The chain must meet

Each narrator has to have taken the report from the man above him. Not “they lived in the same century.” A sitting, a hearing, a book handed over. If a link is missing, the names are mursal, munqati, or mudal — and the report is wounded before the men are even judged.

Did A meet B? Bukhari wanted proof of the sitting. Muslim accepted contemporaneity if tadlis was not feared.

  2. 2

    الْعَدَالَة

    The men must be upright

Adalah is public integrity: a Muslim whose record is not torn by open sin or by a habit of lying. Companions are taken as udul in the Sunni canon. After them, the critic reads the ledgers of jarh and tadil — praise and blame of men.

A known liar, or a man whose fisq is public, drops the report even if the rest of the line is gold.

  3. 3

    الضَّبْط

The memory — or the book — must hold

Dabt is precision. Some carried the words in the chest (dabit sadr). Some in a collated notebook (dabit kitab). If a thiqah’s memory slips a degree he becomes saduq: the report may still be hasan. If he mixes routes and names, he is weak.

Does this man agree with the thiqat when they overlap? Persistent disagreement is a wound in dabt.

  4. 4

    عَدَمُ الشُّذُوذ

It must not contradict the stronger

A trustworthy man can still be shadhdh: he goes against those who are more trustworthy, more numerous, or closer to the source. The chain looks sound. The wording is the odd one. The critic sets it aside, not the man.

Lay every tariq of the sentence beside this one. If the thiqat say one thing and he says another, his letter is the anomaly.

  5. 5

    عَدَمُ الْعِلَّة

It must be free of hidden defect

The illah is the hardest test. The isnad looks connected. The men are thiqah. Then a specialist sees that two sittings were fused, a name was swapped, or a mudallis said “from” when he had not heard. Ibn al-Madini and al-Daraqutni lived in this room.

Compare the roads. A hidden drop of a companion, or a raise of a mawquf saying to the Prophet ﷺ, is an illah.

II · The critic’s desk

How the work is done

  1. 01

    Gather every road

One isnad is a witness. The critic collects every tariq the wording travelled — in the Six, the Musnads, the Mujams — before he speaks.

  2. 02

    Draw the tree

Names that appear on every road are the trunk. Names that appear on one side only are the test.

  3. 03

    Name the men

Not a new rijal file. The names as the compiler wrote them. Then the ledger: thiqah, saduq, daif, matruk.

  4. 04

    Ask if they met

Birth, death, towns, teachers. Muasarah is the wide door. Ithbat al-liqa is Bukhari’s extra bolt.

  5. 05

    Read the formula

haddathana and akhbarana are hearings. an can be tadlis. A mudallis who says “from” without clarifying has not yet proven the sitting.

  6. 06

    Weigh the matn

Does the sentence sit with the Qur’an and with stronger reports? A golden chain cannot baptise a forged line.

  7. 07

    Hunt the illah

Look for the quiet crack: a mawquf raised, a mursal connected in one copy only, a mix of two hadiths.

  8. 08

Give a grade of this isnad

Sahih, hasan, daif, or mawdu — of this printed chain, not of the idea in the sentence. A beautiful saying may still not be his ﷺ.

Hearing formulas

The compiler wrote these words. They tell you how the sitting happened.

ArabicTermWhat it proves
حَدَّثَنَاhaddathanaHe narrated to us — a sitting, heard aloud.
أَخْبَرَنَاakhbaranaHe informed us — often a reading of a book back to the teacher.
سَمِعْتُsamituI heard. The tightest word of hearing.
عَنْanFrom. Connected if the man is not a mudallis; a veil if he is.
قَالَqalaHe said. Needs the sitting to be known from elsewhere.

When the chain breaks

  • مُرْسَلmursal

A successor skips the companion and says “the Messenger ﷺ said.”

  • مُنْقَطِعmunqati

A break somewhere in the line — one missing handshake.

  • مُعْضَلmudal

Two or more narrators dropped in a row.

  • مُعَلَّقmuallaq

The compiler omits the start of his own isnad. Bukhari does this in chapter headings; those are not his musnad sahih.

  • مُدَلَّسmudallas

A man veils a teacher or a sitting. The formula looks clean. The meeting is not.

Supporting roads

  • مُتَابِعmutabi

Another road of the same companion, same wording — it lifts a light dabt.

  • شَاهِدshahid

Another companion, same meaning. It supports the idea. It does not make this isnad sahih.

  • مُتَوَاتِرmutawatir

So many independent roads that collusion is unthinkable. Rare in wording; the meaning of many reports reaches it.

  • آحَادahad

One, two, or a few roads. Most of the Sunnah. Still sahih when the five tests pass.

Six books, six doors

  • al-Bukhari

    Proof of meeting

Ithbat al-liqa. He kept what he judged sahih, and he wanted the sitting named.

  • Muslim

    Contemporaneity

Muasarah. If two thiqah men shared time and tadlis is not feared, the link stands. He groups every road of a report in one place.

  • Abu Dawud

    What the fuqaha use

He put the reports the jurists rely on, and he flagged what he knew was weak.

  • al-Tirmidhi

    He names the grade

Hasan, sahih, gharib, and the mixed labels. The book is a map of method as much as of reports.

  • al-Nasai

    A severe rijal eye

He was hard on men. A report that survives him has walked through a narrow door.

  • Ibn Majah

    He includes the wound

Zawaid that the five do not have — some sahih, some hasan, some daif. The printed isnad must still be weighed.

III · Two roads, weighed

The same science, two numbers

A sahih isnad and a wounded one. Open the printed names. Do not grade the proverb.

  • Sahih of this isnad

The niyyah — a golden isnad

    إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ

Humaydi ← Sufyan ← Yahya al-Ansari ← Muhammad al-Taymi ← Alqamah ← Umar ← the Messenger ﷺ. Connected sittings. First-rank men. Many roads. No shudhudh, no illah that later critics stuck to this wording. Bukhari opened his book with it. That is a sahih of this isnad — not a slogan.

    Open the printed isnad
  • This printed chain is daif

Ibn Majah 224 — the printed chain is not the proverb

    طَلَبُ الْعِلْمِ فَرِيضَةٌ عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ

The sentence is famous. This isnad runs through Hafs ibn Sulayman — a pillar of Qur’an recitation, weak in hadith. Albani, Arnaut and Abd al-Baqi leave the number very daif. Other light routes may carry the first clause as hasan. That is a different claim than “Ibn Majah 224 is sahih.” Weigh the road that is written.

    Open the printed isnad

Nur does not issue a ruling. It shows the names the compiler wrote, the tests the science uses, and the grade later critics gave this number. For fiqh, ask someone you trust in your city.
