Signs of the cut
علامات الجزم
Jazm is only for the present verb. Two signs: sukun, and dropping a letter.
Sukun when the verb is sound: لم يكتبْ. Dropping a letter when the verb is weak or one of the five forms: لم يرمِ، لم يفعلوا (the nun falls).
Workers that cut: لم، لما، لام الأمر، لا الناهية, and the condition tools (إن، مَن، ما…) for the two verbs of the condition.
Quran
2:2
لَا رَيْبَ is a different la (the la that denies a whole class of nouns). For verbs, لَا تَقْرَبُوا in 2:222 is a forbidding la that cuts, or nasb in some readings of similar lines — the point is: look at the worker before you name the chair.
If there is no worker of nasb or jazm, the present verb is raised. That is the default. Do not hunt for sukun on a free verb.
