Signs of the raised

علامات الرفع

Raised is not only a damma. Four signs: damma, waw, alif, and nun.

Damma is the default: الكتابُ. Waw is for the five nouns (your father, brother…) and the sound masculine plural: المسلمون. Alif is for the dual: مسلمانِ. Nun is for the five present-verb forms that keep a nun: يفعلون.

  1. الضمة

    Damma

ُ on the last letter. The ordinary raised noun and the ordinary present verb.

  2. الواو

    Waw

Raised sound masculine plural, and the five nouns in raf: أبوک.

  3. الألف

    Alif

    The dual in raf: كتابانِ.

  4. النون

    Nun

    The five verb forms: يفعلان، تفعلان، يفعلون، تفعلون، تفعلين.

Quran

1:7

الَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ — an'amta, the ta is the doer, raised in meaning (a built past). The ones who were favoured: alladhina, a raised noun in the relative chair.

If you only look for a damma you will miss the dual and the plural. Count the signs, not the one you like.
